The Red Pipestone Quarry of
Compiled by Alan R. Woolworth
Revised and expanded edition
This edition of The Red Pipestone Quarry of Minnesota is a revised and expanded edition of the 1983 special issue of The Minnesota Archaeologist.
From the original edition: “This issue appears as a book devoted to the Pipestone Quarry of Minnesota, long recognized as one of the state’s most significant prehistoric sites, and now a National Monument administered by the National Park Service. Although scores of articles have been written about the quarry, most of the more important works are widely scattered and out-of-print. This book brings them together, articles from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries that contain basic information about pipestone, or catlinite, and the pipestone quarry of western Minnesota. They present 150 years of observations and research regarding the quarry and its products, including two previously unpublished contributions.”
Now, 30 years later, we have updated and expanded the volume adding new material including an exhaustive article on the rock art of the Pipestone National Monument. Originally compiled by archaeologist Alan R. Woolworth - it offers a tantalizing history of the monument as well as insight into the various research methods applied at the site over the last 170 years.
